Goals of Therapy
Depending on whether the patient has latent or active TB, the following treatment outcomes are targeted: (1)
- prevent disease transmission, early diagnosis and intervention, infection containment
- prevent progression of latent TB to active TB
- for active TB- eradicate the causing bacteria, M. tuberculosis, from the affected organs and relieve symptoms
- effectively cure TB infected patients, prevent relapse, complications, resistance and ultimately death
